LIPTON INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS' CHAMPS (KEY BISCAYNE, FLA.) (14 - 27 March, 1988)

(This tournament, started in 1985, has varied in format over the years, but in 1988, the year that Mats won it, it was a full two-week, 128-man tournament, with every round the best of five sets. It was therefore sometimes called the Fifth Grand Slam, and by winning it in 1988, as well as the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open, Mats had a more successful year than Jimmy Connors in 1974, and, incidentally, than Roger Federer in 2004.)

Mats did not take part in the Seoul Olympics because he was suffering from severe shin splints. They persisted on and off during the rest of the year and greatly restricted his opportunities for practising, and his normally fantastic mobility. This obviously affected his performance in the Stockholm Open, the Nabisco Masters and the Davis Cup final.
